Installation help for my scanner?

My scanner should be delivered soon at my house. The thing is, I need help BEFOREHAND with installing it. I know that it comes with an installation CD and manual but I have read reviews saying that I need to download the software from the company’s website PRIOR to inserting the usb cable in my computer hub. PLEASE NOTE: I have VISTA home premium and the last time that I tried hooking an hp all in one scanner/copier/printer it wouldn’t recognize it at all, even after I installed the software from the website, which was after the CD was installed and the usb plugged in. So please, if anyone can give me step by step instructions on what I need to do before I install the CD or plug in the usb cable then please do so! Thanks!
I have a desktop. I don’t understand, with as many hubs as I have and with the purpose of the usb cable, why it wouldn’t recognize it. I don’t want to have to spend money on more stuff to add to my computer. No offense, I just don’t understand.
Ok, so it’s a good idea to download software from the Canon site first and then installing the CD and following it’s instructions from there?
